Estimator – Levels I, II, III

THE JOB DESCRIPTION:  The Estimator reports directly to the Vice-President Pre-Construction Services or the Operations ManagerThe position is responsible for developing the complete system estimate, ensuring all estimating and job-specific processes and procedures are followed. The estimator prepares and reviews all portions of multi-discipline project documents for complex construction work as well as a variety of other projects as assigned. The position supports all estimating needs including managing the estimate process from start to finish.

WHAT YOU DO:   The duties and primary responsibilities below are intended to describe the general content and requirements of this job and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.

  • Prepare project estimates in accordance with the scope of work, developing quantity take-offs, determining manpower, equipment, materials, and subcontractor requirements
  • Obtain quotes from material suppliers, equipment vendors, and subcontractors
  • Develop and apply labor factors based on site conditions, work activity types, and historical performance data
  • Clarify any questions or conflicts that affect the estimate
  • Obtain, review, and input (using software platform) estimating information from contracts, finance, and other resource supports
  • Establish early communications with General contractor/Client
  • Follow documented processes and procedures related to estimating take-off, file storage, proposal writing, ect. Work with entire team to continually develop process improvements
  • Work with Project Managers to review project construction including the development of preliminary plans and equipment selection
  • Communicate with the Operations Team during the bid cycle to validate execution strategy and develop indirect cost models on a project-by-project basis
  • Partner with Project Managers to Identify, analyze and mitigate potential project risks and contingencies
  • Prepare cost studies utilizing historical data, statistical analysis, cost/quantity comparisons, and work to meet the specific needs of the project
  • Conduct bid review meeting with Vice-President of Pre-Construction Services and/or Operations Manager to finalize estimate, markup, and strategies
  • Prepare pricing sheets, bid forms, and other proposal documents for in-house review and submittal
  • Attend bid meetings
  • Attend project kick-off meetings with Project Manager, General Contractor and/or Construction Foreman to communicate the approach and methods used in the estimate
  • Assist with choice and maintenance of estimating databases
  • Manage time to meet objectives; forecasts and plans resource requirements as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

WHAT YOU BRING:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience and education (trade school certification, etc.) and construction estimating
  • Ability to productively work either independently or in a collaborative environment
  • Working knowledge of electrical/mechanical installation, estimating techniques, and cost control
  • Ability to interpret computerized cost data and system information
  • Ability to perform detailed work and successfully meet deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal and written communications skills and ability to maintain relations with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Problem-solving mindset, organizational abilities, and logical thinking skills
  • Team-oriented outlook, keeping the organizational needs at the forefront.
  • Familiarity with computer software and databases (e.g., estimating systems), Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel)
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
  • Flexibility and willingness to accept changes in priorities as necessary
